De Dwaas is het archetypische principe dat te maken heeft met de bewustzijnsfase voor de geboorte en na de dood. De Dwaas is het symbool van bovenpersoonlijk of transcendent bewustzijn bij bijvoorbeeld mystieke en extatische ervaringen. De Dwaas is de eerste maar ook de laatste kaart van de Grote Arcana. Vergelijkbaar met het verhaal van de kip en het ei. De Dwaas (0) is het ei en het Universum (XXI) is de kip, die dan weer het ei legt en zo voort.

De tekening van de Dwaas is een zelfportret. De ene helft kijkt vooruit, als het ware dwars door je heen. De andere helft kijkt achteruit in een spiegel en ziet daar weer zichzelf.
