VOICE OF SPACE [La Voix des Airs] is inspired by a painting of the surrealistic painter René Magritte [1898 - 1967]. The painting was made in 1931 and is part of the Peggy Guggenheim collection in Venice. Together with James Ensor, Constant Permeke and André Delvaux, Magritte is among the most famous Belgian painters of the 20th century. 

He was an extremely prolific and multifaceted artist, whose catalogue boasts over eleven hundred paintings and seven hundred gouaches. He also designed many commercial posters and illustrated several musical scores. VOICE OF SPACE is the first part of THE VENETIAN COLLECTION, a cycle in which Johan de Meij gives his musical impressions of four different paintings from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. 

VOICE OF SPACE has been commissioned by l'Orchestre d'Harmonie de Strasbourg [France] on the occasion of the band’s 155th anniversary. The world premiere took place on March 5th, 2000 at a Gala Concert given by the guest band, The Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Air Force, conducted by Alain Crepin. For its anniversary the band commissioned some ten compositions by European composers, among those Ida Gotkovski, Jérôme Naulais and Roger Boutry. 

The second part of THE VENETIAN COLLECTION is subtitled THE RED TOWER [La Torre Rossa], referring to a painting by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, whom Magritte admired very much. The third part is called MAGIC GARDEN [Zaubergarten] by Paul Klee and the cycle is closed by EMPIRE OF LIGHT [L'Empire des Lumières] another painting by René Magritte. The four paintings are displayed at the Peggy Guggenheim museum in Venice. Together with other outstanding museums in New-York, Bilbao and Berlin, this collection is part of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, one of the largest private art collections in the world. 

In November 2000 THE RED TOWER was awarded the 1st Prize at the International Composition Contest of OMAN.

VOICE OF SPACE [La Voix des Airs] is geïnspireerd op het gelijknamige schilderij van de Belgische surrealistische schilder René Magritte [1898 - 1967] Het doek werd vervaardigd in 1931 en maakt deel uit van de Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venetië. Magritte behoort samen met James Ensor, Constant Permeke en André Delvaux tot de belangrijkste Belgische schilders van de 20e eeuw. Hij was een veelzijdig en productief kunstenaar: zijn oeuvre omvat maarliefst elfhonderd schilderijen en zevenhonderd gouaches. Daarnaast ontwierp hij ook reclameposters en illustreerde hij diverse partituren. VOICE OF SPACE vormt het eerste deel van THE VENETIAN COLLECTION, een cyclus van orkestwerken waarin Johan de Meij een viertal schilderijen uit de collectie van Peggy Guggenheim verklankt. 

VOICE OF SPACE werd geschreven in opdracht van l'Orchestre d'Harmonie de Strasbourg ter gelegenheid van haar 155-jarig jubileum. De wereldpremière vond plaats op 5 maart 2000 tijdens het Galaconcert van dit orkest, uitgevoerd het gastorkest, The Belgium Air Force Band onder leiding van dirigent Alain Crépin. Ter gelegenheid van dit jubileum werd aan maarliefst 10 componisten [waaronder Ida Gotkovski, Jerôme Naulais en Roger Boutry] een compositieopdracht verstrekt. 

De andere delen van THE VENETIAN COLLECTION zijn geïnspireerd op THE RED TOWER [La Torre Rossa] van Giorgio de Chirico, MAGIC GARDEN [Zaubergarten] van Paul Klee en EMPIRE OF LIGHT [L'Empire des Lumières], eveneens van René Magritte. Alle vier de doeken bevinden zich in het Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venetië. Deze collectie maakt samen met markante musea in New York, Bilbao en Berlijn deel uit van de Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, één van 's werelds grootste particuliere kunstcollecties. 

In november 2000 werd THE RED TOWER bekroond met de 1e Prijs in de Internationale Compositiewedstrijd van Oman.

VOICE OF SPACE [La Voix des Airs] est inspirée d'un tableau du peintre surréaliste René Magritte [1898 - 1967]. La toile fut réalisée en 1931 et fait partie de la Collection Peggy Guggenheim à Venise. Avec James Ensor, Constant Permeke et André Delvaux, Magritte fait partie des plus célèbres peintres belges du XXe siècle. Il fut un artiste productif aux multiples facettes: son œuvre comprend pas moins de 1100 peintures et 700 gouaches. En outre, il a réalisé aussi des affiches publicitaires et illustré diverses partitions musicales. VOICE OF SPACE constitue la première partie de la VENETIAN COLLECTION, un cycle musical dans lequel Johan de Meij réalise un portrait musical de quatre peintures. 

VOICE OF SPACE est une commande de l'Orchestre d'Harmonie de Strasbourg [France] à l'occasion de son 155ème anniversaire. La création mondiale a eu lieu le 5 mars 2000 lors du Concert de Gala exécuté par l'orchestre invité, La Musique Royale de la Force Aérienne Belge placée sous la direction du Commandant-Chef de musique Alain Crepin. A l'occasion de cet anniversaire l'orchestre a commandé une dizaine d'œuvres à plusieurs compositeurs européens dont Ida Gotkovski, Jerôme Naulais et Roger Boutry. 

La deuxième partie de la VENETIAN COLLECTION est sous-titrée THE RED TOWER [La Torre Rossa], et réfère à la peinture de l'Italien Giorgio de Chirico dont Magritte était un grand admirateur. Le troisième mouvement s'appelle MAGIC GARDEN [Zaubergarten] d’après la peinture de Paul Klee, et le cycle se termine par EMPIRE OF LIGHT [L'Empire des Lumières] une autre œuvre de René Magritte. Les quatre toiles se trouvent au musée Peggy Guggenheim à Venise. 

Au mois de novembre 2000, THE RED TOWER a remporté le 1er Prix au Concours International de Composition d’Oman.

VOICE OF SPACE [La Voix des Airs] wurde vom gleichnamigen Gemälde des belgischen surrealistischen Malers René Magritte [1898 - 1967] inspiriert. Das Bild wurde 1931 gemalt und ist Teil der Peggy Guggenheim Sammlung in Venedig. Zusammen mit James Ensor, Constant Permeke und André Delvaux, gehört Magritte zu den wichtigsten belgischen Malern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er war ein vielzeitiger und produktiver Künstler der über 1100 Gemälde und 700 Gouaches schuf. Außerdem zeichnete er auch Werbeplakate und illustrierte auch zahlreiche Partituren. 

VOICE OF SPACE ist der erste Teil der VENETIAN COLLECTION, eines Zyklus von Orchesterwerken in denen de Meij vier Gemälde aus der Peggy Guggenheim Sammlung vertont. 

Das Werk entstand im Auftrag des Orchestre d'Harmonie de Strasbourg anlässlich dessen 155-jährigen Jubiläums komponiert. Die Uraufführung fand am 5. März 2000 während des Galakonzertes statt. Es spielte das Königliche Musikkorps der Belgischen Luftwaffe unter der Leitung von Alain Crepin. 

Aus Anlaß dieses Jubiläums bekamen gleich 10 Komponisten [darunter Ida Gotkovski, Jerôme Naulais und Roger Boutry] einen Kompositionsauftrag. 

Die anderen Teile der VENETIAN COLLECTION sind von den Gemälden THE RED TOWER [La Torre Rossa] des italienischen Malers Giorgio de Chirico, MAGIC GARDEN [Zaubergarten] von Paul Klee und EMPIRE OF LIGHT [L’Empire des Lumières], ebenfalls von René Magritte, inspiriert worden. Diese vier Bilder sind im Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venedig ausgestellt. Zusammen mit markanten Museen in New-York, Bilbao und Berlin ist diese Sammlung Teil der Solomon R. Guggenheim Stiftung, einer der größten privaten Kunstsammlungen der Welt. 

Im November 2000 wurde THE RED TOWER mit dem Ersten Preis des Internationalen Kompositionswettbewerbs in Oman ausgezeichnet.
