WILHELM CONRAD RÖNTGEN,
related to a Moll family

ALL THOSE MOLLS

Between 1450 AD - 1750 AD and in particular during the Reformation members of this Moll family-tree moved to the eastern provinces of the Netherlands (Gelderland, Overijssel, Achterhoek) and the Unites States of America and settled there permanently. It is difficult , almost impossible, to establish familial connections between all these Molls. The name Moll is widely spread over Germany. For example, merely in the year 1797 in the village Hagen (near Lennep) with about 1800 inhabitants, 203 men of this village were mentioned by the surname Moll (5)! And, in a letter to the secretary of the Dutch Moll Magazine (1 oct. 1933) the pioneer of the Moll-genealogy in Germany, Prof. Dr. Ir.Friedrich Moll, biologist from Berlin, complains :"Only in Wurtzburg (= Wurtenberg Germany), at least 1000 Moll´s are living to day. In Brandeburg, Thuringen and Passau it is all the same story." The answer of the secretary (Dr.W.H.Moll) was :"So, that´s just like Gelderland with all those Molls !"

Nevertheless, familial relationship between Nobelprize winnar Professor Dr. Wilhelm Konrad (Conrad) Röntgen and a wellknown Moll-family-tree from the cities Lennep and Remscheid (near Solingen, WestPhalen), Germany can be ascertained. "Evidence" indicates that the Nobel prize laureates Nico and Jan Tinbergen from Rotterdam are also related to members of this Moll-tree(4).Genealogical Research about this subject is not yet rounded off..Before 1648, Lennep was part of the County "Berg" to which also belonged Zutfen (Gelderland). Some members of this Moll-tree were Burgomasters of Lennep (i.e. Peter Moll, Melchior Moll ± 1650). However, most of them were cloth-manufactures (i.e. Arndt Moll, Johan Christiaan Moll).

Both from his grandfather and his grandmother, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen is related to a Moll family as well as a family-tree Frowein, both living in Germany (Lennep-Remscheid) and The Netherlands (Amsterdam, Apeldoorn). The relationship is complex and data about intermarriage are not known. The Moll-family tree from Lennep-Remscheid, Germany goes far back in history (1).

In the work "H.C.Schreiber and Dr. K.Wulfrath, Westdeutsche Ahnentafelen, dec. 1939", a detailed description is given about the Moll-genealogie in Rheinland, [Solingen,Lennep and Reimscheid]. In this work a certain Johan Moll (1623) is mentioned as a member of a corporation of grinders. His son Johannes Moll (1653-1709) was married to Catharina Herder (1658-1718) at Solingen and she was the daughter of Wilhelm Herder, ancestor of the wellknown Herder -Moll company.

According to following genealogical data from the research of Dr. Willem Hendrik Moll, Historician Amersfoort, The Netherlands, and published 1939 (2) a complicated connection exists between the Röntgen-family, two Moll-families and two Frowein families, both from Lennep-Remscheid, Germany (3):
