New Book of Human Rights Activist from UZBEKISTAN

SEFER BEKCAN
OTEKi DUNYA KAPISI ONUNDE
At the Gates of Another World

Dear readers,

Through a mistunderstanding the web adress of Erk democratic Party of
Uzbekistan was not included in the book announcement.

This is the Url where the book in Turkish and Russian can be consulted:

<http://www.euronet.nl/users/turkfed/erk.html>

Here follows also an english translation of the beginning of the Book:

SEFER BEKCAN
OTEKi DUNYA KAPISI ONUNDE

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Sefer Bekcan
At the Gates of Another World

Sefer Bekcan was born into a family in exile in 1961. In 1968, he and his
whole family returned to their homeland Harezm.
After completing his secondary education, Sefer served in the Soviet Army
which is a mandatory requirement from all the Soviet citizens. Later, in
1982, Sefer moved to Tashkent and worked as one of the members of the
governing board of the publishing house ``Uzbekistan''. In 1983, he was
accepted as a student by the Department of Literature of the Tashkent
Pedagogical Institute.

Sefer was also a poet, and in his spare time he was writing poetry some of
which were being published in regional and national press.

In 1988, Sefer Bekcan started to actively participate in political movements.
In 1993, while he was a member of the governing board of the political party
``Erk'', he got arrested. He was jailed for three years, and was finally
released in 1996.

While in prison, Sefer started to write his daily experiences relating to his
incarceration. At the end of these three years, when he was released from
the prison he continued to write. This book is now being published, and it
contains Sefer's memories of those three years behind the bars, and the
political events in Uzbekistan that took place in the last ten years.

Sefer dedicated his book to all `real' defenders of human rights, to unnamed
heroes, and especially to his wife Qurbanay who suffered tremendously while
Sefer was in jail.

``I have not fabricated a thing or distorted any truth. When I wrote my
book, I used the real names and did not even change that. Everything is
based on complete truth, and most probably when people read my book, some of
them will be extremely offended. But, regardless of whom I was going to
offend, I had to write the whole truth. My aim in writing this book was and
is more important than either offending or complementing a few people.
Today in Uzbekistan people are suffering immensely under the political
regime's oppressive policies. This book's purpose is to recognize these
unnamed heroes and give moral support to all who are trying their bests to
survive under these very difficult conditions. With my book, I want to let
them know that their efforts and contributions are deeply valued and
appreciated by many others, and one day they will be rewarded for their
sufferings.
On the other hand, there are those among us who are assisting the
totalitarian regime by their ideas and efforts. These treators should
realize as well that treason might be forgiven, but never will be
forgotten''.
