Cornelis Fuhler

Background: 

Born 1964 Barger-Oosterveld / Drenthe / the Netherlands. Began with piano and organ at the age of 6. Later also on self-made instruments. Started studying piano (improvised music) in '83 at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam (a/o. with Nico Langenhuijsen, Charlie Green, Ron van Rossum and Misha Mengelberg). Graduated in `89.

Own groups / projects:

• In '95 he founded the trio, Fuhler - Bennink - de Joode (with Han Bennink - drums and Wilbert de Joode - double bass), which is one of his main vehicles for a jazz related way of improvising. In this trio he sometimes plays at the same time piano, organ, celeste, keyolin and melodica, thus instant arranging whatever they were instant composing. In Feb. 1998 they made a cd, Bellagram, and in Sept. 1998 a live cd (Zilch). They have played in festivals such as Moers-Germany ('99), Nickelsdorf-Austria ('99), Jazz Crossing (Bologna-Italy '00) and Canada (Toronto, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver '00 ). Tinderbox has come out in 2003.
• He has also been working on the mixing of improvisation with chamber music and theater. A major example of this is his group, from `90 to `96, Carduelis Carduelis. Another example is Wayang Detective in `95/`96 (a big project with improvisation, gamelan and shadow puppet play for which he wrote both the script and the music). Olympicnic is a theatrical concert about technological extremes: super 8 films, live fingercameras, powerbook, modular synths, shadowplay inside the grand piano and turntables. The Corkestra is his most recent initiative: 2 drummers, organs, plucked strings: cymbalom, el guitar, double bass en 3 winds.
• ConundromCd, a mini label, provides an alternative avenue to explore ideas by "computer dubbing" of various musical materials. In this way the many facets of his musical activity can be overlaid. This is a form of composition using his own performance on various instruments from his collection. DJ Cor Blimey and his pigeon, "samples in all shapes". In 1999 he was commisioned to develop a solo "DJ" project.
• End '99 he, Anne La Berge and Steve Heather started an ongoing concert-series for electronic music: Kraakgeluiden. During these concerts he developed favorite set-ups such as: EMS+turntable (controling the filters/pitch causing unstable loops, noise and schratchy samples), keyolin and the Mbirinthesizer (oscilators/filters controled by thumb-pianos). Currently he is working on sustained sound from the grand piano by all kinds of electro acoustic devices.
• In 2000, he and Gert-Jan prins started "the Flirts" in which they both play their analogue set-up. A cd has appeared on Erstwhilerecords. They have played in Europe, USA and Australia / New-Zealand.
• He has been a member from '95 of the 11 piece orchestra MIMEO. They've done concerts in Europe (amongst others a 24-hour concert in France) and released 4 cds sofar.
• In 2003 he started the Cortet with Thomas Lehn, Rhodri Davies and John Butcher: electronic music on acoustic instruments........ Cd out on Unsounds 10U

Besides this he has done numerous other projects to explore the world of notes, sounds and keyboards.

 

  

 

Participating in: He played roles in projects of the ICP orchestra, in the opera, "Hier", by Guus Janssen, the Nieuw Ensemble, Magpie Music Dance company, Clusone trio, the Ex, Sonic Youth, and the Maarten Altena Ensemble.
