Drive Setup 1.3 Lite

During the MacOS 8 alpha and beta programs, Apple provided a large audience with CD-ROMs also containing pre-release versions of Disk Setup. Most users are not aware of the significant number of incarnations this program has had. Most of these where never released or where available for only a short period (like the ill-fated 1.2.4 which contained a serious bug).

I did manage to patch Drive Setup 1.2 to make it run on almost all Macintoshes and to have it recognize virtually all SCSI drives. Just when I thought about publishing the patch, I learned that a new version 1.3 was on the horizon, so I did my best to get a pre-release copy from one of the MacOS 8 beta-seed CD-ROMs. On one of these a version of Drive Setup appeared with version number '1.3 Lite'. Patching it turned out to be fairly easy, although for some reason the coding within 1.3 Lite seemed unnecessarly more complex than that of 1.2

The patch for Drive Setup 1.3 Lite was documented and its WWW launch prepared just when I received the released MacOS 8. Although blessed with the same serial number (but without the 'Lite' suffix), Apple again fully re-coded the Drive Setup program - the version within the release is totally different than the pre-releases (which where not indicated as being pre-releases). So again I faced spending time to find out how to patch this final version of Drive Setup 1.3

However, Drive Setup 1.3 Lite installs the same version of disk driver (8.08) as Drive Setup 1.3 of MacOS 8, so it all seems such a waste of time. The dilemma is that Drive Setup 1.3 Lite that I have a patch for was never released by Apple. So I cannot simply distribute the patch alone; since the program you need to supply the patch to is unavailable. However, if you bought MacOS 8, you have paid for a license so I guess using Drive Setup 1.3 Lite is legal in some countries. For persons within these countries you can click here to download Drive Setup 1.3 Lite.
