Macintosh and CD-ROM drives
The Macintosh has been able to access CD-ROM drives since a long time. But just like with harddisks, Apple's CD-ROM disk driver only recognizes Apple's CD-ROM players. So what are your options if your drive is not Apple supplied?
- Buy third-party CD-ROM driver software, like FWB CD-ROM Toolkit.
- Get Apple's CD-ROM software version 5.3.1 (which came with System 7.6). It recognizes a lot (but not all) third-party drives. Rumour has it that this is due to a bug but my personal opinion is that someone within Apple decided to make life easier for clone manufacturers (who use third-party drives). But System 7.6.1 introduced Apple CD-ROM 5.3.2 and Apple changed their mind again.
- Get CD-Sunrise; a freeware CD-ROM driver from Junji Kanemaru that works with any CD-ROM drive. However, it does not support audio or ISO CDs.
