This thoroughly researched critical revision of 240 pages (176 textpages, a 14-page bibliography of nearly 350 titles, an updated classification table, 18 photographic plates representing the original specimens, and an index of species’ names) puts into present-day perspective the fossil species which Alcide d’Orbigny described and figured in the 1840s and 1850s. It is accompanied by a re-edition of the corresponding volume from the Paléontologie française, respecting the original pagination and the dimensions of the Atlas-volume of plates, here presented on 170 pages of ivory-coloured paper (consisting of 456 textpages, including index & contents, with 87 lithographed plates, numbered 149 to 236, published during 1842-1843).
