Japanese Watercolours
from the Meiji and Taisho period

All these watercolours were done in a Western watercolour technique,
on European watercolour paper and with European watercolour paint. Most watercolours are signed in a Western way in Roman letters.
They are made from 1890 till the end of the 1930s by artists with a
Western style education, at Art schools in Japan by Western teachers.
One of them was the English watercolourist Charles Wirgman.

There were many Japanese artist who worked in Western style at the
end of the Meiji period (1868 - 1912 ) and the Taisho period (1912 - 1926).
Many of them worked in Yokohama and sold their work
to foreigners who visited Japan via Yokohama.
