Humus The Saga of a Sonic Humus If what Budha said was real and reincarnation exists, probably in one of his past lifes Jorge Beltran left part of his 'salea' in the Edda Major or in the Saga of the Goenlanders, pillars of the Islandic literature. Like the scandinavians he evokes, Jorge's particular mythology places him far in the north, in the heart of Lindavista, linked to propiciatory names: Stomago Sagrado, Caramelo Pesado, Radio Carolina, SEMEFO. But, like Thorvald, father of Erik the Red, his lineage starts with Humus, personal project with a vast production on the mexican underground: five cassettes (see below), two LPs edited as CDs (Tus Oidos Mienten and Humus) and the recent Malleus Crease, where he has put his imagination to create the sound saga of an 'alternate universe'. Jorge uses a wide array of sonic sources: acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards, flute, bass, percussions, voices and effects with whom he goes wild to structure instrumental compositions of a progressive disposition. Humus has cut the waters of the underground with the intention of showing ' a road never before taken' and guided by the steering wheel of a guitar that, strong on discipline and continuity, has found its own sound, a sound with trippy and psychedelic reminiscences that make Humus an exceptional group in the national underground. Nobody has recently gone this path. From the primitivism of Sientate y Escucha to Malleus Crease the evolution is evident. If the home-field recording of the first is noisy and defective and its cover barely redimable (on an industrial level), the availability of better means has not diminished Humus sonic imagination. On every production, especially since Tus Oidos Mienten, the quality has increased: helped by other musicians, Humus has acquiered more body of sound and the recording studio has turned into one more instrument where Jorge meticulously edits his tapes to deliver themes of a strange architechture where there will always be more than one sound ready to catch the attention. In the hidden face of rock made in Mexico, Humus is one of the names to follow. La Saga de un Humus sonoro. by David Cortes. Newspaper. Mexico. 1995
